Shortly after news of the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Spectrum News 1 Ohio sent Chuck Ringwalt and Brandon Coello Amaya to Graniteville, South Carolina - where, 20 years earlier, a similar tragedy occurred.

In less than 48 hours, the duo interviewed victims, healthcare providers, and first responders. The result was a three part series outlining the health, wealth, and future of Graniteville - and how it directly tied to the challenges facing Ohioans.

In 2024, the series was recognized with an Emmy in the Ohio Valley Region in the category of Societal Concerns.
